Antivirus Software Packages: Find Answers to Your Questions About Antivirus Software Packages

I’d like to put a sign out on the front lawn resembling the pink/blue storks announcing a precious new addition to the family. My only dilemma is what color is appropriate when your new baby comes in a cardboard box packed with bubble wrap? It seems from all these warning notes in the box, I first need to consider whether or not I have the right antivirus software packages installed or if I have to get additional software before putting my new baby to work.

You guessed it; I’ve just bought a new computer. Having been a parent, I mean a computer user, for some time, I thought I knew what I was getting into. At least this kid comes with instructions, but it still feels like I’m about to navigate a mine field. Where should I look for the right protection? It’s not like I can give it a shot to ward off this year’s flu virus. No, these invaders are the invisible kind and won’t get better on their own. I need some serious help to make sure my data and my address book remain secure. I need to learn more about antivirus software packages.

Where Are The Answers To Be Found?

If you’re a die-hard Microsoft user like I am, I suggest starting with the Microsoft website. That’s where I was able to find links to questions and answers that helped me figure out what I needed to do in order to keep my computer and my data safe from unwelcome intruders. The specific Q&A section I went to can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/antivirus.mspx

I guess the first thing about finding the right antivirus software packages is to understand what applications make my computer the most vulnerable. We’ve all heard of the world wide virus scares. I bought the kids a very plain, no frills laptop just so that they could use educational software and use a word processing program to type school assignments without monopolizing mine. The rule for using that computer is that they are not to accept downloads on a flash stick from any of their friends and that they can only play CD’s that are originals from a retail store. Our thinking has been, if the doors and windows stay closed and locked, no one can get in. So far, there have been no problems.

My new computer is another story. I plan to use it for surfing the internet, for paying bills, for staying in touch with my office 300 miles away and emailing dozens of clients, coworkers, friends and family members around the world. Any one of those activities will leave me and my computer vulnerable to the threat of virus, worms or any of a myriad of secret invaders. Just like the human variety, these viruses can wreak real havoc on my computer’s health. Some viruses can delete files saved on my hard drive. Others can attack my address book, sending out their evil computer germs to all of the unsuspecting and undeserving names that have accumulated there.

Why Bother With Antivirus Software Packages?

The prospect of inflicting unwarranted invasions into the computers of my clients, friends and family members is frightening. I also wouldn’t relish the opportunity for these modern day burglars to reach into my online account information and steal funds, information or worse, like my identity.

For those reasons and more, I know it will be a good investment of time and effort to explore additional antivirus software packages to make sure that my new computer has the highest level of protection possible for home computers.
